Rasaleela began almost by accident — the happy kind.
During nearly five years living in India, Trish fell in love with the colour, creativity and sheer richness of everyday life there: bustling markets, beautiful old textiles, intricate prints and the extraordinary skill behind traditional garment making. What started as fossicking for vintage saris and fabrics she simply loved soon turned into a habit of having one-off pieces made for herself by local tailors.
Back in Australia, those clothes kept getting noticed. Friends wanted their own, then friends of friends, and before long boutique owners were asking where they came from.
A hobby became a passion, the passion became small runs of clothing, and in 2002 Rasaleela emerged naturally from that momentum — shaped by serendipity, individuality and a lasting love of Indian textiles, craft, colour and culture.
As Rasaleela grew, those early discoveries in India became the foundations of a design language that is still evolving today. What began as one-off pieces made for individuals gradually grew into small, slow-fashion collections, with an ever-evolving mix of distinctive prints, fabrics and styles. Much-loved classic shapes sit alongside new and contemporary designs, keeping the range fresh while staying true to the individuality that gave Rasaleela its beginning.
That same spirit of curiosity still drives the collections. Each season brings fresh combinations of print, colour, fabric and shape, while staying connected to the craftsmanship, character and sense of discovery that shaped the label from the start.
Rasaleela began in 2002, and since 2006 the collections have been produced through the same family-owned and run factory in India. Returning year after year to develop the upcoming ranges has meant working alongside many of the same people — from the owner and production team to master tailors, fabric cutters, machinists, quality checkers and all the amazing people who help bring each new collection to life.
As the collections have developed, so have those relationships. Years of working side by side have created a genuine exchange of ideas, experience and skill, with Rasaleela’s Australian designs continuing to grow through close collaboration with a production team we know personally and have worked with for two decades. Being there and working alongside the team each time we return also gives us first-hand knowledge of the conditions in which our collections are made, and confidence that the people making them are treated fairly, ethically and with respect.
Quality fabrics and natural-fibre-based materials remain central to Rasaleela, chosen for the way they feel, move, breathe and wear over time. Cotton is a particular favourite, valued for its durability and structure, while softer fabrics bring beautiful drape and ease where the design calls for it — creating well-made clothes that stand up to years of wear, in styles that remain a pleasure to wear time and again.
